Four hours later, Chris came dragging back from the cafeteria, carrying a cup of strong, bitter coffee. He was leaning against the window watching the snow fall when Deb walked through the ER doors with Rick. Deb’s deep brown eyes were red and swollen and her hand shook in Rick’s.

“Chris.” She fell into his arms, hugging him tight. “God, Chris, I’m so, so sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“I’m glad to see you both.” Chris managed a shaky smile. “Are you all right?”

She pulled back, nodding. Rick wrapped his arms around her and she leaned against him. “I’m okay. But Chris, he, he was b-bleeding, the bone was…was sticking out of his leg, and, and he p-passed out, I couldn’t wake him up. I was s-so scared he was gonna d-die.”

Deb turned and sobbed into Rick’s chest. Chris looked up into Rick’s dark eyes. They were clouded with fear and worry. “How is he?” Rick asked.

Chris led them to a group of empty chairs in the corner near the window. “He’s in surgery right now. His leg was badly broken, and he had some internal bleeding. I didn’t get to talk to the doctor long before she had to take Matt to surgery, so that’s really all I know right now.”

Rick reached out and took Chris’s hand. Chris moved closer, and the three of them huddled together to wait.
